Group 2: PCP, Psychedelic Mushrooms, Ecstasy
Group 2 drugs also carry a penalty anywhere from six months in a state jail to life in prison, alongside a fine of up to $10,000, depending on the amount you’re accused of possessing.
For less than 1 gram of possession–even with a Group 2 drug–you face time in a state jail. If you have more than 4 grams (but less than 200), you may face a second-degree felony and up to 20 years in prison.
Group 3: Valium, Xanax, Ritalin
Group 3 drugs are misdemeanors because they can be argued as having some medicinal value. Still, you face up to a year in county jail and a fine up to $4,000 if you’re convicted of a Class A Misdemeanor.
Group 4: Opioids, Codeine, Compounds
Like Group 3, Group 4 drugs are accepted as medically safe under specific circumstances. Thus, the penalty is lower.
However, also like Group 3, you face up to a year in county jail and a fine up to $4,000 if you’re convicted of a Class A Misdemeanor. At a minimum, you’re facing a $500 fine from a Class C Misdemeanor.
Marijuana
Marijuana is the exception to this list because it carries a different penalty structure than other drugs.
If accused of marijuana possession charges, you may be facing anywhere from a Class B Misdemeanor to a First-Degree Felony, depending on the amount you’re accused of possessing.
